A year in the life of an 8 year old boy. Expecting a New Zealand version of Booth Tarkington, I was pleasantly surprised. It's almost as if Walpole looked inside my mind back when I was 8 years old (lo these many years ago). I had forgotten what it was like to be 8, with an endless summer stretching out before me, only to be over in an instant. This book is a wonderful reminder of the magic of childhood, without being overly sentimental or saccharine. A pity Walpole had no children, I think he would have been a wonderful father.Product details

Wonderful, old-fashioned book, beautifully written! One of the best authentic portraits of children I have ever read. Not a deep, introspective book, but a fine, engaging story of children in an English family. No artificially sweet cherubs here. These kids are real. A fine read!
